Arriving in The Solomon Islands

Visa

You may be given ‘Visa on arrival’ for 30 days. For stays more than 30 days, you must apply for a relevant visa. Please refer to the Visa Regulations of Solomons Islands https://immigration.gov.sb/visitor-visa-tourist/


Honiara International Airport

International visitors will normally arrive at Honiara International Airport (HIR), also known as Henderson International Airport.

The airport is the main international gateway to Solomon Islands. Participants should check with their airline and accommodation provider in advance regarding airport arrival procedures and transportation arrangements.

Getting around Honiara

A limited minibus system operates throughout Honiara, while privately operated passenger vehicles also provide transportation services. Traffic congestion can occur, particularly during peak periods.

Participants are encouraged to:

  • Use registered and reputable taxi services or Public buses
  • Confirm the fare before starting a taxi journey
  • Allow additional travel time during busy periods
  • Arrange transportation through your accommodation where possible.

Currency and Payments

The official currency of Solomon Islands is the Solomon Islands Dollar (SBD).

Participants are advised to:

  • Carry some local currency for smaller purchases and transportation.
  • Confirm whether their hotel and other service providers accept credit or debit cards.
  • Keep sufficient cash available for transportation and other essential expenses.
  • Check payment options with their accommodation provider before arrival.

Acceptance of credit and debit cards may vary between hotels, restaurants, shops, and other businesses.


Internet and Mobile Connectivity

Wi-Fi is available at many hotels and business establishments in Honiara. However, internet speed and reliability may vary.

Participants who require reliable internet connectivity for work are advised to:

  • Confirm Wi-Fi availability and quality with their accommodation before booking.
  • Consider obtaining a local mobile SIM or mobile data option as a backup. (you can purchase one on your arrival at the airport)
  • Ensure that your mobile phone is unlocked and compatible with local networks before travelling or on arrival.

Participants should take normal precautions while travelling and staying in Honiara.

For your safety:

  • Keep your passport, cash, and valuables secure.
  • Avoid displaying large amounts of cash or expensive equipment unnecessarily.
  • Use reputable and registered transportation services.
  • Confirm taxi fares before travelling.
  • Avoid walking alone in unfamiliar areas, particularly after dark.
  • Follow safety advice provided by conference organizers, accommodation providers, and local authorities.
